I know this has been asked loads of times but I think my ask may be impossible. Since the lockdown and working from home, my work laptop died on me. I decided to get my Windows 10 PC out of the loft that ive not touched in three years, but I cannot remember the password for the life of me! I have tried the utilman commands, but these say cannot find path specified or some such error when going to X:.

I have tried the registry way of going into SAM but this says the process is in use when loading the hives, so fails. I have tried umpteen “password reset tools” all of which only “work” when paid for. Ultimate boot cd, says there is no windows installtion either through “change windows password” or “PCLoginNow”. Usually I just use konboot , however my drive is encrypted with bitlocker non tpm , so I have to enter the recovery key each time, and doing so seems to ditch konboot, as it doesn’t display.

Anyone used anything that actually works so I can get on with doing some actual work? I have spent 3 hours trying ways! But if you want to go back to the utilman trick, it’s not on X:. It’s on the system drive which with older repair consoles and pre-install environments might be drive D: or E: which with a modern version of Windows 10 should be drive C:.

If it’s yours, wipe it. It’s been in the loft 3 years, the version of windows 10 on it is probably EOL now. Agree with the above comments. Would take longer to fix and update than to nuke and reinstall. Unless you have some files you want to keep though..

Boot into mini Windows XP and there are several password reset programs there. It hasn’t failed me yet. So you’re able to unlock the bitlockerED drive but don’t know the Windows password Since you can get to a CMD prompt, with the drive unlocked, why not just copy to external drive any files that you want?

Download Hirem’s Boot Disk – it has a password cracker utility on it. I have used it before when I forgot a password. The Windows Sticky Keys Hack works well.
